i was flipping through new york magazine's fashion issue (how could i say no to a nicki minaj cover story?) when i spotted a colorful necklace by brooklyn designer duo holst + lee. to say i fell for it instantly would be an understatement. i have a feeling i'll be dreaming about their summer collection for many nights to come. but what really sold me, is that the girls behind the line are really sweet to boot: if you mail them, you can order directly from them. you were warned.
i rarely post anything on here that is press release related, but i think this one is too good to keep from you, and it is so right up my alley i think you'll like it too. traveling between antwerp and geneva, i somehow missed the presentation of this capsule collection late last year, and it wasn't until last week that i finally found the time to look at what tony spackman has designed for belgian brand hedgren. there are just so many reasons to love this bag: it's superfunctional, it looks the right amount of casual meets sophisticated, and it's designed for 'creative people on the road'. could i be any more in love with a bag? no chandler, i could not.

so fab.com came to europe. i've been waiting for a way to be able to actually buy the stuff they select forever. its german version doesn't disappoint: local businesses, little known brands, and good design all around. just like with fab.com, you have to sift through the offers to find one that suits you, but i have a feeling i'll be a regular customer. now here's to hoping they'll be including lots of the cool things that appear on the american site as well.

seems like my good travel karma has run out after a year of frequent traveling without a hitch. in the past few weeks i've missed a flight; had an airline company cancel
another flight a booking (thanks for clearing that up, kim!) i thus had to rebook and repay; had two companies lose my luggage, which they luckily retrieved after a lot of agonizing hours for both me and them (let me tell you: losing a fashion journalist's luggage must be the nightmare of every airline's customer service) and i just generally had some horrible experiences at passport controls and visa offices. the only good thing that happens on every flight without fail, is the view. the take off above i filmed when leaving istanbul, so that's the city you see. the pictures were taken nearing and leaving geneva - i am a sucker for snowy aerial views.
arguably the coolest peeps in the whole of belgium, stefaan pauwels and dominique nzeyimana - a.k.a. knotoryus - just released a book of photos, drawings and inspiring words that was picked up by colette. i'd love to get a - very! - limited edition paper copy for my birthday next month, but if that doesn't work out, i'll happily download the ibook version.
if you're in berlin on march 3 or 4 and share my unhealthy obsession with bicycles, please jot down the berliner fahrrad schau in your calendar. i nearly had a fit watching that little video: cool people, even cooler bikes. i want to buy some of these babies just to hang them on my wall for crying out loud. by the way: if you decide to go, i'd love to see some pics!
can we talk about how awesome j.crew's styling has been the past few seasons? i honestly can't think of any other label that has had such a direct and noticeable impact on how people in the streets dress. the clashing of patterns, the mix of textures, the genius combination of colors and the neverending possibilities of layering... of course j.crew didn't invent all of these things, but they sure do a good job translating it all into fashion that is both inspiring and wearable, and not just for fashion peeps.
that is all.
that is all.
another spectacular weekend in the mountains has gone by and has left me so incredibly grateful to be able to live in geneva (at least part time). this weekend we discovered megève - an instant favorite thanks to its fantastic slopes, breathtaking view of the mont blanc, easy access and lovely eateries. it was definitely as beautiful as verbier and les gets, the two other areas we've fallen in love with. i hope the weather stays this nice for at least another weekend of snow and ski fun.
i was invited by the turkish embassy in brussels to attend istanbul fashion week - and i honestly didn't know quite what to expect. there weren't any turkish fashion designers on my radar yet, and i hadn't been to turkey at all. it turned out to be a few days filled with friendly people, organisational chaos, interesting young creatives, and gooooood coffee. here are my first impressions of my trip last week, and i can't wait to tell you more about a few cool designers i discovered.
my home office is where i need to be inspired 24/7, so i try to fill it with interesting graphics and typography. from the covers of mast brothers' chocolate bars to an ever growing collection of note books and coffee mugs (filled with pens, cables, pins and rolls of masking tape), i try to keep the mess out of view and select only the nicest items to surround me every day.
random things i love in these pictures: one of my mugs says #1 boss-lady - a gift from a very talented (nd obviously very smart) intern // another one says i heart kiehl's, because i do // i use the boxes of my byredo scented candles to hold paperclips, staplers and such // the banner i got from banner banter mistakenly reads 'viita' but i rather like that // the geometric mobile by artecnica is a souvenir from new york // i had the nerd sign custome made by william dohman // my favorite notebooks are these, these and these // my chair is bulo's tab chair // and that's my boyfriend's artemide tizio
lately i've been neglecting my ipad in favor of the stack of real books and magazines i'm trying to work through - but i gladly shoved them aside for a night when i discovered kinfolk. the foodie/lifestyle magazine has a beautifully made app, and its contents are downright inspiring. if you're allergic to the portland/brooklyn hipster 'tude though, don't go there. even for a fan like me, the articles seemed somewhat pedantic here and there. but the pictures - oh my. i want to go live in them.
came across this series of videos exploring the concept of home - and i love everything about them. i've actually been to the burger place in the film above and recognised some of the people - it's so nice to hear them talk about their cherished jobs (what about the guy who's been there for 59 years!)
something i've been trying to do for quite some time now: unplug during the weekend. sometimes i can, sometimes i can't - but at least now not every weekend is filled to the brim with an overload of information. by the way, how cool is this student animation project by margaux le pierres?
i can spend hours on end browsing through tumblrs, blogs and pinterest boards filled with timeless style, design and photography. if you're ready to get sucked into a vortex of black and white elegance, be sure to visit convoy, oliver heimann, my absence, the pursuit aesthetic and the often hilarious bourbon and pearls.
i've been wanting to get more serious about coffee for a while now, so illy's invitation to discover its newly launched monoarabica capsules was a welcome excuse for me to finally attend a real coffee tasting session. diego allaix of the università del caffè di trieste (yes, there's a coffee university - how cool is that?) kindly explained to a small group of belgian foodies how to detect the different aspects of coffee's aroma. difficult stuff, you guys. basically i sucked at it, so i'll need lots of practice. and like i needed yet another reason to drink more coffee, of course the monoarabicas tasted delicious.
the coolest presentation at fashion trade fair who's next was that of e-boutique dressing the man. in the mr. brown hall (chockfull of really nice menswear labels), they offered a threedimensional version of their website. every day, they put another item of clothing in the spotlight by incorporating it in three differently styled outfits. i love the concept, and i love their style.
